Hiroki Iwata, MD

Dr. Hiroki Iwata joined the Ishibashi Lab at Boston University in 2026 as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow. He received his MD from the University of Yamanashi, Japan, and later earned his PhD from Hamamatsu University School of Medicine, Japan. He completed clinical training in anesthesiology and is board-certified in both anesthesiology and intensive care medicine in Japan. Prior to joining Boston University, he worked in Japan as an anesthesiologist involved in perioperative and critical care management for cardiovascular surgery.

His clinical experience led to a strong interest in neurological complications associated with cardiopulmonary bypass and cardiac surgery. Through translational research, he aims to better understand how cardiopulmonary bypass affects the developing brain and contributes to postoperative neurological injury.

His current research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of brain injury and repair following cardiopulmonary bypass, with particular interest in neural stem and progenitor cell responses and mechanisms that support brain recovery after surgical stress. Outside the laboratory, he enjoys traveling and exploring new places.
